ncb_a_mcdermott_sy_400You may or may not know this amazing basketball star on the Creighton Bluejays team, but around here, he’s a BIG deal.  Actually, around anywhere  if you’ve been paying attention to any basketball news.  One of the best collegiate players of all time and an All-American three times in a row, Doug McDermott is a star.

Currently a junior, he had to make the decision this week between playing another year for Creighton or being a part of the NBA draft. For the longest time, students, staff and fans all over had no idea what he would choose.  Of course we wanted him to stay, but the NBA is a big deal and he would definitely do well by moving up.

Today, Doug announced, via his Twitter, that he will be staying with Creighton for one more year.  With thousands of retweets and favorites on his announcement as well as a LOT of original tweets about the news, people everywhere are incredibly excited that Doug decided to stay.

Screen shot 2013-04-25 at 4.27.28 PMThis morning was when I found out that he would be announcing his decision today.  So, being the good (and slightly attached-to-her-phone) journalism student I am, I refreshed my twitter feed at least every five minutes.  I was running laps around the track when I got the news – that definitely helped the speed!

The fact that such an important announcement (as seen by the national sports stations covering it now) was done on Twitter is just, well, awesome.  Anyone who was interested could get the news basically firsthand from Doug himself.  The fact that such (deservingly) famous people are able to contact their fans – or anyone – directly is one of the things I love about Twitter.  That one-on-one contact has not been available before, so many people really appreciate and enjoy it now.

I am SO excited for next year’s season and can’t wait to see Doug lead the team in our new conference. Go Bluejays!dm_130305_ncb_josh_jones_skype
